This house has quite a story—and honestly, so do we. What started as a neglected property slowly turned into a labor of love, filled with DIY projects, home renovations, and creative design ideas that transformed it into the comfortable home it is today.

How Our Home Renovation Journey Started

When we first bought this house, it had seen better days. The previous owners had neglected it for years, and it needed serious attention.

But there was one thing we couldn’t resist: the location.

Living just a block from the ocean was something we had always dreamed of. So even though the house needed a lot of work, we saw the potential and decided to take on the challenge.

We rolled up our sleeves and began transforming the house one project at a time—painting, renovating, decorating, and slowly bringing life back into every space.

Like many home renovations, it wasn’t quick or easy. But watching each room evolve made every bit of effort worth it.

When Hurricane Sandy Changed Everything

Just when we thought we were making real progress, life threw us a curveball.

In 2012, Superstorm Sandy hit our coastal community in New York and devastated the area. Being so close to the ocean, our home was hit hard. Water rushed through the house and caused significant damage to the basement, first floor, and exterior.

It was heartbreaking.

After years of work renovating and improving our home, we suddenly found ourselves starting over.

But instead of giving up, we chose to rebuild.

And oddly enough, that challenge ended up opening the door to even better ideas and renovations that we might never have considered before.

Rebuilding and Reimagining Our Home

If there’s one thing I’ve learned through this experience, it’s that homes evolve over time.

The second time around, we approached renovations differently. We thought more carefully about design choices, layout improvements, and how to make the home feel even more comfortable and functional.

Our style began to shift as well. What once leaned more traditional gradually evolved into a coastal contemporary style, inspired by our surroundings and the relaxed vibe of beach living.

One of the most exciting parts of this journey has been tackling DIY home projects.

As our home evolved, I realized I wanted to share the process with others.

That’s how Houzewize was born.
