One Room Challenge – Week 4
Thank goodness for peel-and-stick wallpaper because this wall transformation is a bittersweet one for Week 4 of the One Room Challenge
One Room Challenge – Week 4 – Bittersweet wall transformation
We are at the halfway mark of the One Room Challenge and it’s getting intense with everything I need to accomplish in the next four weeks. This past week we accomplished the bittersweet task of covering my daughter’s mural wall with wallpaper.
When we moved into our home, my daughter was only around six years old and I painted this mural in her room with a valley, a castle, flowers, and a stone wall with a gate leading up to the castle. In hopes, she would gaze into the valley and create scenarios, visualize playing in the grassy hills, and let her imagination soar.
My daughter loved the wall and was difficult for her to see it go. Because it reminds her of her childhood.
Now that she is graduating from college, It’s time to advance to adulthood and have an updated room that represents who she is now.
My daughter still wasn’t ready to give up the mural completely so I decided to install peel-and-stick wallpaper. This way it’ll ease her into the idea of accepting the change. The wallpaper is removable at anytime and won’t damage the wall underneath. So it was a win-win all around.
She loves the ocean and waves… one of her favorite pastimes is to walk down to the beach and watch waves tumble and crash. When I saw this beautiful peel-and-stick wallpaper “Asian Wave” I knew she would love it.
How to hang peel-and-stick wallpaper
-Determine how much wallpaper you will need, by calculating the height and width of the wall, including the doors and the windows. I purchased an extra roll in case I run short. This will ensure that every roll will come from the same machine, and will be a perfect color match.
-Prepare the walls by cleaning any dust particles off the walls. Also, make sure the walls are smooth.
-If your walls are newly painted, you should wait about three days before applying peel-and-stick wallpaper.
-Installation is pretty easy once you get the hang of it. Peel off about 12 inches of the backing paper from the wallpaper. Line up the top of the paper at the ceiling, and then slowly peel and stick the paper down the wall. Use a squeegee or a plastic smoother to get rid of any air bubbles to create a nice even look. When you get to the bottom, just evenly cut with a utility knife and smooth wallpaper.
-Peel and stick wallpaper can stretch if you pull on it too hard, this can prevent the pattern from lining up perfectly. For this reason, you don’t want to apply too much pressure to strips as your work.
The wallpaper is complete… All-in-all there has been a good amount of progress.
