The room was plastered, primed where necessary, and painted with deep rich color. Looks great… I love the cavernous feeling at night which makes it cozy and comfortable.
The Baby Seal black walls and the faux painted cement gray walls pairs well together to create the foundation of the room. Next step is to add the wood slats to the faux painted walls.
Staining wood slats
A recent trend I am loving is using wood slats on walls to create a multi-dimensional look. I couldn’t wait to try it somewhere in my house. This bedroom makeover was the perfect place to add this modern sleek design.
There are budget-friendly ways to create slats using sanded plywood and cutting the wood strips using a miter saw. But, that would’ve taken too much time and work for me to do, I’m already lagging behind I didn’t want to lose and more time or create more work. So, I purchased 32, 1″X 2″ X 8′ select pine wood slats from Lowe’s to make my life a bit easier.
I also liked the thickness of the 1-inch pieces as opposed to 1/4″ or 3/4″ I would get from plywood. You can paint or stain the wood to get the desired look. I opted to stain the wood with Willow Gray from Varathane, it turns out the color is beautiuf but not quite sure if there’s enough of a contrast. You’ll be able to see next week the end result, till then I’ll test the waters with other options.
To stain the wood, I simply took an old cotton t-shirt wiped the stain evenly across the slat. Being that there were no grooves or cracks I chose to use a rag instead of a paintbrush or sponge brush. Once I finalize the color, I’ll seal the wood using a paint brush. This is such a great project to tackle in a weekend, I can’t wait to settle on a color and put it up.
