DIY modern house number sign with planter box

DIY modern house number planter box

Hi there, hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving and a long weekend to relax. Now that we are in the holiday mode, I’ve been hustling and bustling around here decorating for Christmas. Since I am not ready to show you my Christmas decor, I want to share a DIY modern house number sign with planter box my son Kyle made over the summer. It turned out so great I just had to share it.

We have yet to replace our house number sign since we renovated 8 years ago. It’s about time to stop driving our guest crazy looking for our house and finally make it easier for them.

I spotted array of awesome house number planter boxes on pinterest and immediately fell in love with the idea. My son Kyle also liked the looks of this sign and wanted to take on this project. I said go for it!

How to DIY modern house number sign with planter box

First, gather all your supplies needed for your diy modern house number planter box. We had all the supplies leftover from other projects so we only had to purchase the house numbers which we bought from Home Depot.

Cut the plywood to the specific sizes for each panel using the circular saw or table saw.

Then attach the two side panels to the front panel using smear of wood glue on the edges. Then use the brad nailer to nail the panels together. Finally, attach the bottom piece and the back panel using the same method. Use the wood filler to cover the nails and sand the box to prepare for the stain.

Kyle used Ebony color by Varathane to stain the wood. It works well with the dark trim of the outdoor lights and gives a perfect contrast to the exterior of the house.

Once the stain is completely dry, the box was sealed with 3 coats of polyurethane to protect against the outside elements.

Determine how you want the numbers to appear on the box. Measure approximately 1-1/2″ from the top and mark where to drill the holes for the screws. Then, pre-drill the holes and screw in the numbers.

Satin Nickel finish house numbers added a perfect contrast to the planter box and can be easily visible from the street.

The box was sealed with 3 coats of polyurethane to protect against the outside elements.

Kyle drilled approximately 10 holes on the bottom for drainage so that the plant would not get root rot. I love the way it turned out… Kudos to Kyle, he did a great job!
