DIY Backyard Wood Privacy Fence: How We Built Ours Step-by-Step instructions. Transform your outdoor space with a DIY wood privacy fence and enjoy your backyard like never before this summer. As soon as the temperature starts to creep up, we get the itch to enjoy our backyard space as much as possible. There’s something about warm weather that makes me want to live outdoors. Entertaining and dining alfresco in the backyard is our favorite pastime during the warmer months. But if I’m being honest… our backyard wasn’t always a place we wanted to hang out in. It was open, unfinished, and lacked privacy. The only thing in our yard was the bluestone pavers installed after Hurricane Sandy. The pavers defined our small backyard area, but that is all it did. It didn’t feel cozy or relaxing at all! So, during the height of the pandemic in 2020, we finally decided to give our backyard a much-needed makeover. It was a great way to keep ourselves distracted during such a precarious time. Since we already had a complete blank slate, it was easier to get started. So we started visualizing what we needed in our backyard and created a design plan. The Backyard Transformation Begins The very first feature we added was this beautiful pergola, which my husband built in 3 days. It was the height of COVID lockdowns, and like many people, my husband needed something productive to focus on. With all the free time, he dove right into our backyard makeover. That pergola ended up setting the stage for everything else we added to the yard. From there, the backyard slowly began transforming from a bland, empty space into a cozy outdoor sanctuary. Some of the DIY projects we completed included: • Building a backyard pergola• DIY two extra-large cement planters• Building an outdoor console table• Constructing a large outdoor dining table Little by little, our backyard started to feel like an extension of our home. But one thing was still missing. Privacy! Why We Decided to Build a Privacy Fence? Our backyard borders another property that, unfortunately, has been empty for years. No one has lived there for almost a decade, and that yard has become pretty unsightly. We decided to build a wood privacy fence to block out the overgrown yard next door. Two sides of our backyard already had a white PVC fence with decorative fretwork on top that faced the street. But I didn’t want the same style going all the way around the yard. We wanted something warmer and moodier to complement the pergola and wood features we had added. So we decided to build a wood privacy fence along the side that connects to the neighboring yard. The difference it made was incredible. Our backyard instantly went from an open, exposed space to a private and cozy retreat. How to Build a Backyard Privacy Fence (Step-by-Step) If you’re thinking about building a DIY privacy fence, here’s exactly how we did it. Step 1: Mark the Fence Layout The first step is to mark where the fence will go. We started by running a string line along the fence path. This helps keep the fence perfectly straight. Next, figure out the spacing between posts. Typically, fence posts are spaced 6 to 8 feet apart. Because of the height of our fence, we spaced our posts 6ft apart for additional strength and stability. Step 2: Set the Corner Posts First Corner posts are always installed first. Once those posts are in place, you can stretch a string line between them to guide the placement of the remaining posts. This ensures the fence stays perfectly straight across the entire length. Step 3: Prepare the Fence Post Holes Fence post holes should typically be: • About 2–3 feet deep• 10–12 inches wide Digging deep holes is important because it provides the structural support needed to keep the fence stable over time. Adding a few inches of gravel at the bottom of each hole helps with drainage and prevents moisture damage. Step 4: Set Posts in Concrete Once the holes are ready, place the post inside and pour concrete around the base. Before the concrete sets, check that the post is completely straight using a level. This step is crucial because everything else in the fence will align with these posts. Allow the concrete to cure for at least 24 hours before attaching rails or panels. Step 5: Install the Horizontal Rails After the posts are secure, install the horizontal rails between them. Most privacy fences use two or three horizontal rails, depending on the height. The rails create the structure that the fence boards will attach to. Step 6: Attach the Fence Boards Now comes the part where the fence really starts to take shape. Attach the vertical fence boards one by one across the rails. We left a small gap between boards to allow the wood to expand and contract with temperature changes. Keeping the tops aligned will give the fence a clean, professional look. Step 7: Stain or paint the Wood fence In order to protect the wood from weather damage, we used Advanced Deck and Concrete paint. We painted the wood fence the exact same color as the concrete wall beneath the white PVC fence helped tie the color scheme throughout the yard. Painting or staining the wood fence helps to: • Protect against moisture• Prevent sun fading• Reduce warping and cracking• Extend the life of the fence The Final Result: A Cozy Backyard Sanctuary Once the fence was complete, the backyard took on such an incredible transformation. We were able to add these beautiful goose neck sconces and hang plants on the new fence to shed light above the bbq area. Finally, our exposed yard turned into a cozy outdoor living space where we actually enjoy spending time. Even though we have added a lot to our backyard, there are always new projects that make their way onto our to-do list. A wood privacy fence that creates the perfect amount of seclusion. Is Building a Privacy Fence Worth It? Final thoughts Absolutely. Looking back, building our privacy fence was one of the most impactful backyard projects we completed. If your backyard feels exposed or lacks character, building a privacy fence might be exactly the project you need. Our backyard may look smaller now, but we have defined our space and made the yard feel much more intimate and intentional. Its privacy and coziness is well worth it. If you’re willing to DIY a wood privacy fence, you can save thousands compared to hiring contractors. It took a yard that once felt open and unfinished and turned it into a peaceful outdoor retreat. Sometimes the biggest backyard transformations start with just one simple idea. For us… It started with a fence. Disclosure: Affiliate links are used in this post

Once those posts are in place, you can stretch a string line between them to guide the placement of the remaining posts.

Fence post holes should typically be:

Digging deep holes is important because it provides the structural support needed to keep the fence stable over time.

Adding a few inches of gravel at the bottom of each hole helps with drainage and prevents moisture damage.

Even though we have added a lot to our backyard, there are always new projects that make their way onto our to-do list.

A wood privacy fence that creates the perfect amount of seclusion.

Is Building a Privacy Fence Worth It? Final thoughts

Absolutely.

For us…

It started with a fence.

Step-by-step guide on how to paint a feature wall: Unleash the power of paint Hello friends, are you feeling uninspired by your living space? Is your home in need of a bold and captivating makeover? Recently I have been feeling as such in my living room. It has been looking very mundane and uninteresting lately. I needed a change, a bold, transformative change. It took months of contemplating how to make this space more interesting. I finally decided to transform the space with a painted black feature wall. This was the best and the most cost-effective way to gain the needed change. Painting a room is one of the most budget-friendly ways to breathe new life into any room. Incorporating deep rich color in design choices has taken the interior design world by storm. Deep color offers a striking and sophisticated solution to renew a space. In the realm of interior design, color holds immense power. It can influence mood, perception, and even the perceived size of a space. Choosing the Feature Wall A feature wall or an accent wall, is one wall within a room that is designed to stand out. Painting this wall with a contrasting color instantly becomes the focal point, adding depth, drama, and visual interest to the space. It also can evoke emotions and significantly influence the ambiance of a room. It adds depth, creates contrast, and creates a sense of mystery and sophistication. Traditionally, feature walls were painted in vibrant hues or adorned with wallpaper to highlight a space. The trend of painting a feature wall black has emerged as a bold and contemporary approach. We have added a feature wall to many rooms in our home. You can see some of them throughout our house here, and here. I also added a feature wall in our bathroom using tile and in our powder room. First I had to choose the right wall for this striking change. Not every wall is suitable for a dramatic black makeover. Selecting the right wall to paint black was important for me to achieve the right effect. I had to consider the room’s layout, natural light sources, and existing decor. I was contemplating painting the wall that our large TV sits against to make the TV blend into the wall. But I feared there would have been too much black in the room so I chose to paint the smaller walls with windows. Small steps… This wall was perfect because as soon as you walk into the house, you are immediately drawn to this wall. The wall is broken up by the large white fireplace and two windows with floor-to-ceiling curtains. This provides perfect contrast and interest. How to prepare your space to paint a black feature wall After we decided on the wall that was best suited to be the feature wall, it was time to prep. We then took the time to prepare the floors, furniture, and adjacent walls. Proper preparation is key to achieving a flawless finish when painting walls. This included cleaning the wall surface and taping the areas to create a straight painting line. You can cover the floors with rosin paper or drop cloth, we used drop cloths. Once you’ve completed the necessary preparations, it’s time to unleash the power of black and transform your space. Adding Depth to a Space Contrary to popular belief, painting a feature wall black can make a small room appear larger and more spacious. The dark color on the wall made our living room appear wider by defining the space. The color created the illusion of depth, tricking the eye into perceiving the space as more expansive. Lighting Consideration Proper lighting is important in a room when you’re planning to paint a black feature wall. Consider the light coming from the windows and how it will appear with the dark wall. Ambient lighting from floor lamps or table lamps can create a warm and inviting glow, softening the intensity of the black hue. Paint and Techniques for Painting We went to our local Lowe’s Home Improvement store and we looked through so many black paints. There’s such a great selection of paints so taking the time to pick the one we wanted was important. We chose Tricorn Black from Sherwin Williams, which was the perfect black for this space. Painting a wall black requires a careful approach to get good results. First, we cut in (painting along the edges) with a brush. I used this angle paint brush from Zibra Paint and it especially made cutting along the jagged edges of our stone fireplace so much easier. Using a roller for larger areas ensured even coverage and a smooth finish. We applied two coats of paint to ensure the lighter color didn’t come through. How to paint a feature wall These Zibra paint brushes were gifted to me and worked so well when cutting the edges. While the black feature wall will undoubtedly be the star of the show, it should be complemented with the right accents and decor. The stone beige color curtain is a perfect contrast against the black wall. Transforming the space with the contrasting color gave our white furniture and white fireplace the perfect backdrop. The deep color helped to enrich the visual interest and depth. Transform your space with a black feature wall Learning the simple tricks on how to paint a feature wall can make the process easy and fun. Painting this feature wall black was daring but a bold design choice that transformed our living room. It can turn any space into a stunning and sophisticated room. Whether you’re seeking to create a cozy and intimate ambiance or add depth to a small room, this dramatic transformation is sure to leave a lasting impression. Embracing the power of black this feature wall became the canvas for your space.
In the realm of interior design, color holds immense power. It can influence mood, perception, and even the perceived size of a space.

A feature wall or an accent wall, is one wall within a room that is designed to stand out.

How to prepare your space to paint a black feature wall

After we decided on the wall that was best suited to be the feature wall, it was time to prep.

Adding Depth to a Space

Contrary to popular belief, painting a feature wall black can make a small room appear larger and more spacious. The dark color on the wall made our living room appear wider by defining the space. The color created the illusion of depth, tricking the eye into perceiving the space as more expansive.

Lighting Consideration

Proper lighting is important in a room when you’re planning to paint a black feature wall. Consider the light coming from the windows and how it will appear with the dark wall. Ambient lighting from floor lamps or table lamps can create a warm and inviting glow, softening the intensity of the black hue.

Paint and Techniques for Painting

We went to our local Lowe’s Home Improvement store and we looked through so many black paints.

So, grab your toolbox and get ready to be inspired by these 4 DIY projects that transformed our small backyard into a delightful space. These 4 DIY projects gave the functionality we needed in our backyard. 1. Defining seating area with DIY Pergola Creating a dedicated seating area was first on the agenda. Building a pergola over the seating area was a game changer. It created a enveloping cozy space to lounge in and it defined the seating area. We had to consider the overall size of the freestanding pergola, including the shade canopy/overhang. Also, had to determine the outside dimensions and the height. We decided the perfect size for our space would be 9 ft. by 12 ft. pergola. It should fit well over the furniture we chose. Check out the DIY guide to best pergola for your back is right here. 2. Getting creative for adding greenery in a paved yard with DIY large cement planter With limited space and a paved backyard, we had to get creative when it came to adding greenery. We wanted trees but we have pavers throughout except for a little dirt patch on one side. That’s when I came up with building a extra large cement planter to accommodate a dwarf fruit trees. I also wanted fruit trees in my backyard. I told you I wanted to fit as much as I can in my tiny backyard.???? This DIY extra large cement planter went viral! This project got the most views out of all my projects! The extra large planter consisted of creating a form out of plywood and screws, then pouring in cement. You can get the detailed DIY guide to building this viral extra large cement planter here. Not only did our large cement planter with apple tree add visual interest to the space, but it also provided us with fresh apples late summer and fall. It was a true testament for getting the most out of a small space. 3. DIY outdoor dining table could be good enough for indoor Outdoor dining table can quickly eat up your budget, but with a little ingenuity, you can create stylish table for a fraction of the cost that would be good enough to have inside your home. DIY projects like building a wooden dining table can add personality to your backyard without breaking the bank. We took it a step further and built a table that is stylish and original. I added fluted detail to the base of the table created a one of a kind look. See the DIY guide to building this stylish outdoor dining table here. 4. DIY outdoor console table use as buffet This outdoor console table was a serendipitous idea. I had a beautiful piece of granite my friend was getting rid of during her renovation. I knew one day it can have a place in my house, so I graciously took it off her hands. While my husband and I were scouring Home Depot for another project, I had an light bulb moment about what to do with the piece of granite. To Build a outdoor console table. This was such an easy build, it took no more than two hours. I love having this extra surface to set up drinks, food, condiments when we are entertaining. A good alternative for the granite is wood planks that is safe for outdoor projects. All the details on how to DIY an outdoor console table is here. And there you have it, folks – 4 DIY projects that transformed our small backyard into a true outdoor sanctuary. Not only did we save a ton of money by getting doing it ourselves, but we also had a blast in the process. So, what are you waiting for? I knew one day it can have a place in my house, so I graciously took it off her hands. While my husband and I were scouring Home Depot for another project, I had an light bulb moment about what to do with the piece of granite. To Build a outdoor console table. This was such an easy build, it took no more than two hours. I love having this extra surface to set up drinks, food, condiments when we are entertaining.

A good alternative for the granite is wood planks that is safe for outdoor projects.

Hi dear friends, we are finally seeing the sun come out around here in NY. It’s been weeks of cloudy days and I’ve had to give myself an extra push to do anything creative. I finally mustered up the incentive to make this DIY air-dry clay bowl, and it was so easy and fun to do. This would be a great project to do with your kids. Let’s dive into the world of air-dry clay… Ready to mold and shape a beautiful bowl? No fancy kilns or elaborate setups are needed. Grab your favorite tunes and let’s have some fun. What you will need: I would suggest one block of air-dry clay for a small bowl and one and a half blocks for a larger bowl. The thickness of the bowl should be around 1/4″ thick for strength if it’s too thin there’s a possibility of it breaking. I learned this as I was doing it, and also if the clay is too thin and harder to work with. Need a rolling pin, a bowl (for shaping), and a bowl of water. If you want to create a design you can use any kind of tool to make an impression on the surface of the clay. I used a spoon to create divots in the clay, I love the way the depression on the clay looks. You also need a clean smooth surface to work on. Affiliate links are used in this post. Supplies needed: –Air-dry clay -Bowl for the mold -Small bowl of water –Paintbrush -Spoon Knead, roll, and repeat the air-dry clay Let’s get our hands dirty – literally! Knead that clay until it’s feeling all warm and fuzzy. Then roll it out till it’s nice and smooth while maintaining a 1/4″ thickness. My first time, I made it thinner and it was difficult to work with. After I researched a bit more, I found that 1/4″ is a good thickness to aim for. Shape It and mold it Now, the fun part! Gently lift the clay off the surface and place it over the bowl, or any object you choose. You can use any quirky-shaped object you find to use as the mold. Embrace the imperfections – they’re what makes it uniquely yours. Time for Some Pizzaz Unleash your inner artist! Stamp patterns, press in textures, or experiment with funky designs. There are no rules here, just let your creativity flow. If the clay is cracking, you can use a small artist paint brush or make-up brush to dip into water to smooth out the clay. You can always dip your fingers in water and smooth out the clay. Be sure not to put too much water onto the clay though, it can weaken the clay when it comes time for it to dry. It can create cracks on the surface. I used a spoon the make the divots on the bowl for my design. You can use any tool to create fun details and patterns on the surface, it’s all up to you. Drying time It’s the waiting game now. Leave your creation to air-dry fully before handling. Trust the process; your bowl needs its beauty sleep. I let it rest for a few hours before I removed it from the bowl, and it still wasn’t completely dry inside. I was a bit impatient, so I let it dry overnight and it was perfect. Finishing touches for you air-dry clay bowl Once your bowl is fully dry, smooth out any rough edges with a little water. Once completely dried, I painted the entire bowl black. Then painted the organic shape rim with gold leaf paint. Added a clear sealant for that polished look. I hope you try this easy DIY air-dry clay bowl project. Remember, there’s no right or wrong way to craft. Embrace the process, celebrate the quirks, and most importantly, have fun creating your one-of-a-kind air-dry clay bowl! let’s inspire each other on this creative adventure! I would love to know if you would try this project. Here are a few other fun projects here and here.

Drying time

It’s the waiting game now. Leave your creation to air-dry fully before handling. Trust the process; your bowl needs its beauty sleep. I let it rest for a few hours before I removed it from the bowl, and it still wasn’t completely dry inside. I was a bit impatient, so I let it dry overnight and it was perfect.

Once your bowl is fully dry, smooth out any rough edges with a little water. Once completely dried, I painted the entire bowl black. Then painted the organic shape rim with gold leaf paint. Added a clear sealant for that polished look.
