Beautiful Christmas garland for bannister
Hi everyone, hope you had a wonderful weekend. This is such a busy time of the year preparing for holiday season. There are few changes I am making to my usual Christmas decor. First thing you see when you enter my house is the staircase, so I wanted to create is a beautiful Christmas garland for the bannister.
In the past years, I put our pre-lit garland from Costco and attach a ribbon in the front and call it done. Although, the garland from Costco is beautiful without much embellishments, adding few ornaments will give it a beautiful appearance. This year I wanted to add a little extra zing to my garland and my overall holiday decorations.
Here are the steps to create this beautiful Christmas garland for your bannister or mantel.
- Faux garland base. Started with a pre-lit garland from Costco as the base. This garland has a great fullness and an appearance of a real garland. It’s already embellished with pine cones to give it a luxe look. Best of all, you don’t have to wrap lights around it, it’s already done for you. You may want to add extra lights at the end so that the garland has extra sparkle.
- Purchase real branches. I purchased white pine fir garland and cedar branches from Home Depot. Then took apart the pine fir garland to use as fillers. I also had faux leaf branches that I had saved from a previous floral arrangement, which added a beautiful smooth texture leaves.
- Add filler. After I took apart the real garland, I tucked pieces along the sides to create a wispy droop. Inserted branches on top added tons of volume.
- Add ribbon. Even though I chose not to add ribbon to my garland, you can add it to yours to give extra color and dimension. Choose ribbon with wire, it makes it easier to manipulate and shape. Ribbon should be added after you fill the garland with real branches and before you add the ornaments. Prepare your ribbon by twisting a piece of wire floral wire around the ribbon at every 12 inch space. You can place the ribbon on the sides or zig zagging across on top.
- Add ornaments. Now you can add ornaments in the colors and sizes you choose. Adding these embellishments takes it to the next level and make it look like a million bucks. If you are using breakable ornaments, make sure to securely attach with floral wire. I put the garland up on the railing before I add all the detail in order to make sure the ornaments are in its ideal placement.
This year I am changing things up and have so much to share with you in the next few days. Hope you check back soon.
