From Dated to Designer: A Before and After TV Cabinet Makeover That Completely Changed the Look

There’s something incredibly satisfying about seeing a before-and-after makeover of a piece of furniture that felt outdated and seeing it get a completely new life. This TV cabinet makeover is one of those projects that proves you don’t always need to buy new furniture to get a fresh, updated look.

My friend wanted an updated contemporary new look to freshen up her home while she was in Florida for the winter.

She replaced most of the furniture but if there was any way to update her existing furniture, I took the opportunity to do so.

Like this TV cabinet, she was ready to put it out to pasture, and I told her I thought there was potential hidden beneath the dated finish, decorative metal inserts, and traditional hardware.

The shape was beautiful, the construction was solid, and the curved front gave it character. It just needed a little vision.

Cabinet makeover: Before the transformation

The original cabinet featured:

Ornate black metal scrollwork on the doors

Black curved marble top

Traditional ring-pull hardware

Yellow-toned wood finish

Heavy, old-world styling

While the cabinet was well-made, it felt dark and overly decorative for the fresh, more modern space my friend wanted. The metal inserts, in particular, made it look busy and dated.

The goal was simply to create something lighter, cleaner, and more timeless while preserving the cabinet’s beautiful curves and architectural details.

I decided to use my trusty go-to pole wrap to replace the metal scroll inserts.

I used pole wrap on my daughter’s dresser drawers to give them a whole new look while doing her room makeover. It came out great!

The Transformation

1. Removed the Decorative Metal Inserts

2. Added Texture

The biggest change came when I removed the ornate metal scrollwork from the doors and replaced it with the pole wrap fronts. It instantly modernized the entire cabinet, and it was so easy to work with the door’s bend.

The new door panels added a subtle textured detail and dimension to the cabinet without overwhelming the design.

Texture is one of my favorite ways to give a cabinet makeover to make furniture feel custom and high-end.

3. Updating the cabinet with a neutral color

Then I painted the cabinet with Retique It Wood and primer, with a stain over it to give a natural wood look. Soft warm beige with a wood stain over it that feels much more current than the original yellow-toned finish.

This neutral color brightens the piece while still allowing it to feel warm and inviting. It’s a perfect balance between modern and traditional.

4. Kept the dark marble top for contrast

One design element that remained was the dark marble top.

We liked the contrast between the lighter wood base and the darker top, which grounds the piece and adds visual interest.

5. Swapped Out the Hardware

I replaced the original ring pulls with new brushed champagne bronze knobs.

It’s the small details like hardware that have a huge impact on furniture makeovers. It is the jewelry for furniture.

Cabinet makeover: The After

The finished cabinet makeover feels completely different. My friend was overjoyed with the results when she saw it.

What was once a dark, somewhat outdated entertainment center is now a sophisticated piece that works beautifully. It works perfectly in the quiet, luxury-inspired space we were trying to create for my friend,

Why I Love Furniture Makeovers

Projects like this remind me why I love to make over furniture.

Solid wood pieces often have far better construction than many newer alternatives, and with a little creativity, they can be transformed into something that looks custom-made.

A few coats of paint, updated hardware, and some thoughtful design changes can completely change the personality of a piece.

Final Thoughts

This cabinet makeover is proof that you should never judge a piece of furniture by its original finish.
