Step 1: Start with the wreath

I used off-white taffeta fabric I had left over from another project; it worked out perfectly.

First, I cut a strip of fabric, 24″W X 24″L for the bow, a 24″W X 36″L strip for the tail of the bow, and a 4″W X 8″ L strip for the center of the bow.

To make the bow, I folded the fabric back in half and glued along two edges, leaving one opening. After the glue is dry, turn it inside out to show the right side of the fabric. Then turn in a small hem at the last opening edge and glue along the edge.

Now flatten the fabric, showing the seam in the middle.

Bring both ends together to form the bow.

You can secure the ends to the middle of the bow with a zip tie, rubber band, or floral wire.

Making the tail for the bow is similar, fold the fabric in half lengthwise, but cut the ends at a slight angle and glue the edges, leaving one end open to turn inside out.

Make the small loop for the middle using the same method and attach it around the center of the bow. Then thread the tail through the loop behind the bow to create the elegant, flowing finish.

To give the wreath a more romantic, wedding-inspired look, I layered soft tulle behind the bow’s tail.

Most oversized bows look best placed:

• Slightly off-center
• At the top of the wreath

Use the floral wire left on the back of the bow to secure it tightly to the wreath frame.

Once attached, fluff the loops and arrange the tails until you’re happy with the overall look.

Convert a hallway closet into a Laundry closet by installing a washer and dryer set into a small space, it’s an ideal solution for a small space

How to Transform a Hall Closet Into a Bedroom-Level Laundry Closet

As for many of us, laundry is one of those never-ending chores we just can’t escape. No matter how many loads you do, there’s always another basketful waiting.

For me, the worst part wasn’t even the laundry itself. It was carrying heavy loads up and down two flights to our unfinished basement with rickety steps. The basement, another major project for the future that I can’t wait to see happen.

So, I started brainstorming every possible way to make laundry less of a hassle.

That’s when the crazy idea clicked to convert our 2nd-floor hallway closet into a laundry closet!

I asked my contractor husband if it could be done, and he said yes!

Lucky for us, our adjacent bathroom was being renovated, which gave access to water and drain.

Why did we move the laundry upstairs?

When you think about it, most of the dirty laundry is generated from the bedrooms and bathrooms. Clothes, towels, bedding — it all starts upstairs. So why was our laundry room two floors away in the basement?

We decided to move the laundry to the same level as our bedrooms. Makes sense, right?

There was one closet next to the upstairs bathroom, and it was the only space that could be converted into a laundry closet.

Since the adjacent bathroom was being renovated, it gave us the perfect opportunity to tap into the water and drain for the laundry closet.

So we jumped on the chance to bring the laundry machines upstairs. Because once we complete the bathroom reno, the opportunity will be gone or too complicated.

One of the biggest challenges in our home is the limited closet space. You can see how we built our much-needed kitchen pantry closet in place of our bookshelf to gain storage space. It really added so much storage space!

We couldn’t eliminate a linen closet, but had to move it elsewhere.

I’ll show you where we put the new linen closet and how we built it in another post on that soon.

Things We Had to Consider Before Adding Laundry Upstairs

In order to accommodate a washer and dryer. This closet had the perfect width for the LG washer-dryer we purchased.

Except we had to steal 6 inches from my daughter’s room for the depth, she was not thrilled about that!

But the return is well worth her protest; she quickly saw how easy it would be to do her laundry and forgot about the 6-inch encroachment into her bedroom.

How we converted our hall closet into a laundry closet

• The first step was measuring the closet — and then measuring it again, because this is one of those projects where every inch matters. Our existing linen closet was wide enough for the washer and dryer tower, but not deep enough to fit the machine properly. We had to get a little creative. The back wall of the closet was shared with my daughter’s bedroom, so we removed it and borrowed about 6 inches from her room to extend the closet depth. We framed out the new wall, closed it up with sheetrock, plastered, and painted it until it looked like it had always been there. We also made sure to leave enough clearance around the machine, with at least three inches on each side and about eight inches above, to allow for proper airflow.

• Once we established our water and drain source from the adjacent bathroom, the difficult part was over. We used a SharkBite washing machine box to connect the hot/cold water supply line and drain.

• We used a magnetic dryer vent connector, which made this step so much easier. Once the dryer was pushed back into place, the connector snapped right on, giving us a secure connection without having to wrestle with the vent hose.

• For our setup, a gas line had to be brought up from the basement to connect the dryer. If you do not have easy access to a gas line, a ventless electric heat pump dryer can be a great option. Since it does not require a traditional vent setup, it offers greater flexibility.

• Have the correct electrical outlet installed for your washer and dryer setup.

• Another important step was making sure the floor was level. This is especially important with a washer-and-dryer tower because you do not want the machine shaking, bouncing, or doing its own little dance during the spin cycle. Thankfully, the LG WashTower has four adjustable legs, which made it much easier to level the machine and keep everything nice and sturdy.

• We also added a plastic drain pan underneath the washing machine for a little extra peace of mind. If there is ever a leak or overflow, the pan helps protect the floor and gives us an added layer of protection.

• Now it is a matter of sliding the machine into place and giving it a test run.

Is an Upstairs Laundry Closet Worth It?

Converting our hallway closet into a laundry closet was one of the best decisions we made.

There is definitely a growing trend of moving washers and dryers upstairs or onto the bedroom level. I completely understand why.

This is definitely one of those home improvement decisions that immediately made everyday life easier. The laundry is now right where we actually need it.

If something makes daily life easier, I am all for it.

Since we’ve moved the laundry up to the bedroom level, I can honestly say it has been a game-changer. No more hauling baskets up and down the stairs. No more avoiding laundry because it feels like such a production. Everything is simply more convenient.

Converting our hall closet into a laundry closet was one of the most practical home updates we could’ve made.

From Dated to Designer: A Before and After TV Cabinet Makeover That Completely Changed the Look

There’s something so satisfying about taking an outdated piece of furniture and giving it a whole new life. This dated TV cabinet got a modern, designer-inspired makeover with pole wrap, a warm wood-look finish, and champagne bronze hardware.

My friend wanted an updated contemporary new look to freshen up her home while she was in Florida for the winter.

She replaced most of the furniture, but if there was any way to update her existing furniture, I took the opportunity to do so.

Like this TV cabinet, she was ready to put it out to pasture, and I told her I thought there was potential hidden beneath the dated finish, decorative metal inserts, and traditional hardware.

The shape was beautiful, the construction was solid, and the curved front gave it character. It just needed a little vision.

The original cabinet featured:

Ornate black metal scrollwork on the doors

Black curved marble top

Traditional ring-pull hardware

Yellow-toned wood finish

Heavy, old-world styling

While the cabinet was well-made, it felt dark and overly decorative for the fresh, more modern space my friend wanted. The metal inserts, in particular, made it look busy and dated.

The goal was simply to create something lighter, cleaner, and more timeless while preserving the cabinet’s beautiful curves and architectural details.

Materials and supplies used for this TV Cabinet Makeover

• Pole wrap
• Retique It Wood’n Primer
• Wood stain and exact color
• Champagne bronze knobs
• Sandpaper and grit
• Paintbrush or roller
• Adhesive used for the pole wrap
• Protective topcoat, if used

I decided to use my trusty go-to pole wrap to replace the metal scroll inserts.

I used pole wrap on my daughter’s dresser drawers to give them a whole new look while doing her room makeover. It came out great!

The Transformation

Step 1: Remove the Decorative Metal Inserts

Step 2: Cut and Install the Pole Wrap

The biggest change came when I removed the ornate metal scrollwork from the doors and replaced it with the pole wrap fronts. It instantly modernized the entire cabinet, and it was so easy to work with the door’s bend.

The new door panels added a subtle textured detail and dimension to the cabinet without overwhelming the design.

Texture is one of my favorite ways to give a cabinet makeover to make furniture feel custom and high-end.

Step 3: Create the Wood-Look Finish

I applied Retique It Wood’n Primer and applied gel walnut color wood stain over it. The combination toned down the original yellow finish and gave the cabinet a softer, more natural wood appearance.

This neutral color brightens the piece while still allowing it to feel warm and inviting. It’s a perfect balance between modern and traditional.

4. Kept the dark marble top for contrast

One design element that remained was the dark marble top.

We liked the contrast between the lighter wood base and the darker top, which grounds the piece and adds visual interest.

Step 5: Replace the Cabinet Hardware

I replaced the original ring pulls with new brushed champagne bronze knobs.

It’s the small details like hardware that have a huge impact on furniture makeovers. It is the jewelry for furniture.

The finished cabinet makeover feels completely different. My friend was overjoyed with the results when she saw it.

What was once a dark, somewhat outdated entertainment center is now a sophisticated piece that works beautifully. It works perfectly in the quiet, luxury-inspired space we were trying to create for my friend,

Transform your outdoor space with a DIY wood privacy fence and enjoy your backyard like never before this summer.

If your backyard feels exposed, a DIY wood privacy fence can completely transform the space. In this post, I’m sharing how we built our backyard wood privacy fence step by step, what materials we used, how we spaced the posts, and how the finished fence made our yard feel more private, cozy, and complete.

As soon as the temperature starts to creep up, we get the itch to enjoy our backyard space as much as possible. There’s something about warm weather that makes me want to live outdoors.

Entertaining and dining alfresco in the backyard is our favorite pastime during the warmer months. But if I’m being honest… our backyard wasn’t always a place we wanted to hang out in.

It was open, unfinished, and lacked privacy. The only thing in our yard was the bluestone pavers installed after Hurricane Sandy. The pavers defined our small backyard area, but that is all it did. It didn’t feel cozy or relaxing at all!

So, during the height of the pandemic in 2020, we finally decided to give our backyard a much-needed makeover. It was a great way to keep ourselves distracted during such a precarious time.

Since we already had a complete blank slate, it was easier to get started. So we started visualizing what we needed in our backyard and created a design plan.

The Backyard Transformation Begins

The very first feature we added was this beautiful pergola, which my husband built in 3 days.

It was the height of COVID lockdowns, and like many people, my husband needed something productive to focus on. With all the free time, he dove right into our backyard makeover.

That pergola ended up setting the stage for everything else we added to the yard.

From there, the backyard slowly began transforming from a bland, empty space into a cozy outdoor sanctuary.

Some of the DIY projects we completed included:

Little by little, our backyard started to feel like an extension of our home.

But one thing was still missing.

Privacy!

Why We Decided to Build a Privacy Fence?

Our backyard borders another property that, unfortunately, has been empty for years. No one has lived there for almost a decade, and that yard has become pretty unsightly.

We decided to build a wood privacy fence to block out the overgrown yard next door. Two sides of our backyard already had a white PVC fence with decorative fretwork on top that faced the street.

But I didn’t want the same style going all the way around the yard.

We wanted something warmer and moodier to complement the pergola and wood features we had added.

So we decided to build a wood privacy fence along the side that connects to the neighboring yard.

The difference it made was incredible.

Our backyard instantly went from an open, exposed space to a private and cozy retreat.

How to Build a Backyard Privacy Fence (Step-by-Step)

If you’re thinking about building a DIY privacy fence, here’s exactly how we did it.

Step 1: Mark the Fence Layout

The first step is to mark where the fence will go.

We started by running a string line along the fence path. This helps keep the fence perfectly straight.

Next, figure out the spacing between posts.

Typically, fence posts are spaced 6 to 8 feet apart.

Because of the height of our fence, we spaced our posts 6ft apart for additional strength and stability.

Step 2: Set the Corner Posts First

Corner posts are always installed first.

Once those posts are in place, you can stretch a string line between them to guide the placement of the remaining posts.

This ensures the fence stays perfectly straight across the entire length.

Step 3: Prepare the Fence Post Holes

Fence post holes should typically be:

• About 2–3 feet deep
• 10–12 inches wide

Digging deep holes is important because it provides the structural support needed to keep the fence stable over time.

Adding a few inches of gravel at the bottom of each hole helps with drainage and prevents moisture damage.

Step 4: Set Posts in Concrete

Once the holes are ready, place the post inside and pour concrete around the base.

Before the concrete sets, check that the post is completely straight using a level.

This step is crucial because everything else in the fence will align with these posts.

Allow the concrete to cure for at least 24 hours before attaching rails or panels.

Step 5: Install the Horizontal Rails

After the posts are secure, install the horizontal rails between them.

Most privacy fences use two or three horizontal rails, depending on the height.

The rails create the structure that the fence boards will attach to.

Step 6: Attach the Fence Boards

Now comes the part where the fence really starts to take shape.

Attach the vertical fence boards one by one across the rails.

We left a small gap between boards to allow the wood to expand and contract with temperature changes.

Keeping the tops aligned will give the fence a clean, professional look.

Step 7: Stain or paint the Wood fence

In order to protect the wood from weather damage, we used Advanced Deck and Concrete paint.

We painted the wood fence the exact same color as the concrete wall beneath the white PVC fence helped tie the color scheme throughout the yard.

• Reduce warping and cracking
• Extend the life of the fence

The Final Result: A Cozy Backyard Sanctuary

Once the fence was complete, the backyard took on such an incredible transformation.

We were able to add these beautiful goose neck sconces and hang plants on the new fence to shed light above the bbq area.

Finally, our exposed yard turned into a cozy outdoor living space where we actually enjoy spending time.

Even though we have added a lot to our backyard, there are always new projects that make their way onto our to-do list.
