Backyard makeover continues with more DIY projects

As we Spring into the season, the days are longer and brighter and it makes me so happy. We can’t wait to start spending time in our backyard again. We’ve been looking out into our backyard pining for the summer days when we will be enjoying our outdoor space. Last year we started on our journey to create our little backyard sanctuary and it has been such a delight. This has been one of the most fun and rewarding projects we have taken on. We couldn’t finish all the projects on our list, but we did manage to get quite a bit accomplished. So, the backyard makeover continues with more DIY projects and cool designs.

You can see the checklist of the projects we have completed so far and the projects we still have to do at the end of this post.

Here’s a recap of some of the projects we did in our backyard last year.

Our DIY Pergola

I love our pergola

The most remarkable feature in the backyard is the pergola my husband built. It took him 3 days, but it was 3 very long days.

He stained it white to keep it bright, crisp, and clean looking.

We added conversation seating underneath the pergola for our guests to enjoy and relax. Added pillows to soften the area and added throw blankets to cuddle with on a cool night making it cozy and inviting.

This pergola added a completely separate outdoor room to our space and is my favorite spot!

Our biggest concrete project ever!

The next major projects were two incredibly large concrete planters for our dwarf apple tree and Hydrangea plant. These two planters are a real showstopper. I love the way they turned out, they provided a way to add softness with large plants to an otherwise hard surface.

Adding an outdoor mirror

Whether you want to give the illusion of a larger space or give a whimsical touch to your garden, adding a mirror can do just that.

But be sure to properly seal the mirror so it can withstand the outside elements. You can see how to waterproof a mirror for your garden here.

I added lots and lots of plants

Adding flowers and plants is like adding jewelry. Beautiful colors and textures help to make your garden look amazing.

Here are all the completed projects checked off so far in our backyard and hope to finish the rest before summer begins, fingers crossed!

  • Pergola – One of the prominent features I want to add is a pergola. I love the coziness and the comfortable feeling you get sitting under a pergola or an outdoor room.
  • Make or buy large cement planters
  • Wood fence – Gray wood fence with climbing plant
  • Outdoor kitchen- This is a must-have… We love barbeques, so we have to incorporate a small kitchen area.
  • Dining table and chairs – In order to dine al fresco, we want to have a long dining table to accommodate 8-10 people.
  • Install mirror
  • Build console under the mirror
  • Create a Belgian fence, espalier
  • Outdoor seating – Seating for under the pergola to enjoy the days of summer.
  • Accessories and plants to give beauty to the backyard
  • Build new steps from the house to the backyard

I gathered a few outdoor dining table ideas for the backyard, now to decide which style? Your input would be much appreciated!

Stay tuned for my upcoming posts on the beautiful DIY console table and our gray-stained modern fence.
